The Love of the Father (by Behnam Eftekhari) TRANSCRIPT

1 John 2:15-16
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. Because all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
The test of your Christian maturity is the love of the Father
Your experience of the love of the Father and your living out the love of the Father
What keeps us from the love of the Father
What hinders the love of the Father
What takes the love of the Father away from us:
The lust of the flesh
The lust of the eyes
At the center of every sin is lust and pride
Lust reveals want / dissatisfaction / idolatry
Pride reveals insecurity / lack of trust / unbelief
If your life consists of lust and pride you cannot be happy
The problem lies in our dishonesty about these things
As we see lust it tells us certain things
Our pride tells us certain things
If you examine yourself and you see bitterness and lust it tells you that you’re not satisfied with God
It reveals your need to come close to God, to be with God
Or it reveals your need to come to God, to have his forgiveness in your life, his presence in your life
Our sin reveals everything about us
The most important thing is honesty!
The first step is to be honest and acknowledge that, “I can’t do it”
To admit that you are not able to do it yourself
If we were to honest with ourselves and with God we would say, “I need others in my life”
“I need God in my life”
“This is where I’m at”
The reason we hinder our growth in the Christian life is by not being honest
With ourselves, with God and with others about our sin, our struggles, our need for help, and trying to be something we are not
In this way, we cannot receive what we need!
God cannot give us what we need for our growth when we are not honest
Dishonesty about our sin will keep us from the love of God
Dishonesty about your need for God will keep you from growing spiritually
In the garden when Adam and Eve sinned and God came and said, “Where are you?” they hid
And Adam said it was Eve, and Eve said it was the serpent, and they blamed other people
One thing we commonly do is blame others
Or we blame the enemy and say, “The enemy is attacking me,” instead of saying, “What is this trial teaching me?”
What is this sin trying to show me, what lack is there in me that I fall into these things?
It’s the word of God that you hide in your heart that you may not sin!
It’s your intimacy and your love for the Lord that destroys your lust
When you are satisfied with the Lord- you were made for the Lord.
You were made to have a relationship with him
The love of the Father in your life is the level of your maturity
The Bible says consider what the Lord Jesus went through and you will be able to go through what you’re going through
Christ bore the guilt and the shame for all the world’s sins
Not just the physical torture and physical pain
But he bore the guilt and shame as if he had committed all those sins
The Bible says he started to bleed in his sweat
It’s a condition where your veins pop because of that level of stress
And on the cross he said, Father, why have you left me?
Because God is holy, he wants nothing to do with sin
He had to separate himself from sin
What we deserve is to be separated from God because of all our sins
But Jesus was separated from God instead of us and died on the cross instead of us
We deserve to be separated from God but Jesus was separated from God instead of us
We deserve to die because of all our sins but Jesus died for your sins and my sins
God didn’t just say, I love you, he demonstrated his love for us
By becoming one of us
He humbled himself to become one of us so that he could redeem us
When God assures us by his actions of his love for us and his forgiveness, we can be open and we can be honest with him about our sin
We can be honest and we can be open because we know there is forgiveness for our sin
As long as we continue to pursue the pride of life, the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, those who pursue these things do not have the love of the Father in them the Scripture says
As long as we pursue these things we cannot have the love of the father in us
The hindrance to the Christian walk is when we give in to these things
We fail to recognize our need and give in to them
These are the things the devil tempts everyone with
Right from the beginning these are the things the devil tested Adam and Eve with
Genesis 3
Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.” And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them. Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.
The devil also tempted Jesus with lust and pride
Luke 4:1-13
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’” And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.
Jesus, in redeeming us, didn’t just die for our sins
Jesus didn’t just take the punishment that was necessary for us on himself
Jesus had to overcome where we failed
Where Adam and Eve fell, Jesus overcame
When they gave in to the lust of the eyes, he overcame
the pride of life, he overcame
In every way that we fall and we fail Jesus was successful
Therefore he was qualified to take our place on the cross
The Bible says that Jesus was sinless
The Bibles says because Jesus was without sin, our sin wad laid on him
These are the things that hinder us from the love of the Father: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and pride
These things begin to uproot the love of the Father from within us
There is a place that’s called “walking in the Spirit”
where you walk in the power of God
It takes time to get there
But when you learn to walk in him
when you learn to recognize his still small voice
and not in your own desires, in your own ways, in your own thoughts
you start to experience the love of the Father
the way our bodies are designed tells us absolutely that we have a need for others
we were made to become one with others
pride and lust confuse that
and you start to use your body for things it wasn’t created for
it starts with our relationship, our connection with God
the problem is not the outside, the problem is in our heart
If you do not have peace in your heart, it’s not what you have or don’t have on the outside, it’s just your heart
it’s your relationship with God
Once you acknowledge your need for God you can take steps toward him
I want you to close your eyes
I just want to thank God
I just want to thank God that he is faithful
Through the tests we go through he is faithful
I was thinking about when we exercise and do the same routine and workout, our muscles get used to it, and they stop growing
If we went through the same things always we would not grow, whether that’s mentally, emotionally, spiritually
So God has to put you in new circumstances and situations in order to grow you and test you
The Lord has to reveal the kinks in your armor
In order to build you up
No matter where God has taken you, not matter where you are, he wants the same for all of us
He wants us to know his love
To walk in freedom
from the corruption of the world which is evil desires
which is pride/insecurity
God wants to deliver us from that endless cycle of misery
from dissatisfaction
from confusion
God wants to deliver you
It’s about you and God
Father I pray that you help us to be honest
about sin and its result
about its destruction in our lives
about how it destroys our minds and our hearts
how it keeps us from love
how it keeps us from you
In Jesus mighty name
